I would like to offer students a chance to creatively explore, try new things, collaborate with their peers, make connections, generate ideas, and learn through experience. The idea behind maker space is to focus on student inquiry where knowledge is created and not just consumed. Students are provided with opportunities to apply their critical thinking and problem solving skills amongst their peers in a safe environment where there is no consequence for failing, but rather it’s the experience of learning how to take those failures, evaluate their mistakes, rethink their approach, and create their own success. For example, a student might be tasked with construct a ramp or chute with Keva blocks to run a marble through and they must manipulate the blocks to run a marble through successfully. Students might be asked to code their Ozobots to go through an obstacle course or build a stable structure using their Powerclix(r) blocks. Students are able to engage in authentic learning experiences and solve complex problems by thinking outside of the box. Students get to pursue subjects that interest them and become the makers of their own personalized learning.
