I teach in a Title 1 public elementary school is upstate New York. My classroom is a K-2 self contained classroom for students with intellectual disabilities. Some are at a pre-kindergarten level while others push out into gen ed for academics and socialization. In addition, many have behavioral and social-emotional challenges. Many of the students in my classroom have very challenging home lives as well. Many struggle to get their basic needs met. The school provides free breakfast, lunch, and snack, but often, this isn't enough to keep their bellies full. Despite this, my students are eager to learn with just the right tools.
I strive for my classroom to be a warm, caring, playful, space, where my students feel safe and loved, independence is fostered and where can learn and grow, through hands on, engaging activities that meet their individual needs.
