  • Spanish Engagement Through IXL!

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

I'd like to start off by thanking each and every one of you for helping achieve the goal of the Dual Language team of P.S. 380 to purchase IXL in Spanish! My students have been enjoying using the Spanish IXL games and lessons to strengthen their reading, writing, and speaking skills in the second language. It has become a staple in our morning routines on Spanish days.

My students really enjoy the different learning units that Spanish IXL provides them. From counting in Spanish to learning daily conversational language, my students are learning different components to become more knowledgeable of the Spanish language. They love discussing the activity of the day and gaining an award when completing the activity correctly.

Thanks to you all, my students have a new opportunity at learning Spanish. IXL is an engaging way for them to learn the Spanish language using visuals and auditory scaffolds. I'm confident that as they use it daily, they will improve in their Spanish literacy skills.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Augustin

  • Social Distancing for Success!

    Funded Oct 29, 2020

My class and I are very grateful to have received resources to provide a safe and sociably distanced classroom. With your donation, I was able to purchase materials that provided a visual of what an appropriate distance for in school learning looks like. My students were excited and helped me set up the materials around the classroom.

My students and I benefitted from the colored tape because it was used to tape a six feet distance around the classroom and hallway. This allowed for students to stay a safe distance from each other when learning. My students benefitted from the "safety" station which contained hand sanitizers, alcohol wipes to clean their areas, and student sized masks. Lastly, my students and I benefitted most from the plexiglass that can be used during one to one instruction.

With the use of the plexiglass, I am able to assess my student's reading levels in a safe and protective way. I am also able to provide one to one feedback without becoming too close and fearing an unsafe distance. My students are so thrilled we can have a safe but welcoming classroom once more! My hopes are to work on a safe collaborative project to encourage more student engagement during this pandemic.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Augustin

  • An Appealing, Diverse, and Leveled Spanish Library

    Funded Dec 2, 2019

The dual language team and I is writing this letter to thank you for your generous donation to our classes. The money you donated was used to purchase leveled Spanish reading books for grades Kindergarten-third grade.

In kindergarten, students are using the books to learn new words in order to enhance their vocabulary. In first grade, students are identifying the sight words they have learned. In second grade, students are practicing to read two syllable words in order to improve their fluency. Lastly, in third grade students are using the comprehension skills in order to discuss grade appropriate topics.

Once again, the dual team appreciates your kindness and support. With your help, these students are learning how to further their knowledge in a second language using the Spanish leveled books that were much needed.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Augustin

An appealing Spanish library with a diversity of books and leveled literature will allow for students in the dual language program to grow in Spanish language proficiency, social/emotionally, and culturally. Students in the dual language program are engaged readers, who are always seeking a variety of genres for Spanish books; however, our program is lacking of the resources to build on language skills so that students can become stronger in Spanish. All four class grades are constantly sharing the scarce amount of books we have in one language. Also, students who have read through the small amount of books in the Spanish library have nothing else to look forward to. We the dual language team have decided to address this need of Spanish books, so that the interest of students are constantly sparked in both languages, and not just English. The products we have selected for the program will indeed be a blessing for the dual language classrooms, and the students we serve!
