Dress-up play isn't just fun for preschoolers, it's an important way they use their imaginations, build vocabulary skills, and gain confidence. There are many reasons to add a variety of dress-up clothes in a classroom. As teachers, we know that when kids use their imaginations, they also are working on other important educational, creative, and social experiences. As children role play together, they take turns, cooperate and socialize. Children that are provided the opportunity to use their imaginations become great problem solvers as adults. Also, studies have linked role-playing to empathy. Children who engaged in role playing were more skilled in judging how others might feel than those who didn't. As children substitute various clothes and objects symbolically as they play, this is a precursor to all later academic experiences, like reading, writing, and math. The variety of dress-up clothes will motivate my students to express themselves and pretend various roles as they engage in dramatic play. Young children learn best through play. The benefits from playing dress-up include imagination, emotional and social development, and creativity. It's very important to provide the appropriate materials the children need to enhance their pretend play. Having a variety of dress-up clothes will give my students the opportunity to role play. Role playing will help my students develop ideas about how the world works.
