Outdoor Classroom: The portable desks and picnic blankets will put a fun twist on their idea of where they go to learn. Inside the classroom they sit in groups of four. They will keep their seating arrangement when class is held outdoors by each group of four sitting in the same order on their picnic blanket. I already have a rolling whiteboard which will allow me to effectively be able to teach outside.Thi fun environment which will encourage them to be a little less afraid of math. Squishmallows: I previously shared a classroom with another teacher. She had purchased a few Squishmallows and students absolutely loved them. Students that struggle with impulse control, aggression, and restlesness were extremely calmed by hugging the Squishmallow during class. Their behavior improved, were much more focused, and more engaged during class. Even students that don't have those struggles showed they were more relaxed and focused during class when they hugged a Squishmallow. Since there was a limited amount students earned a Squishmallow by being the first ones to be in their seat prepared for class. It greatly sped up the entrance routine. Students that received the Squishmallows that period performed better which had a positive impact on the entire class. Mindfulness Area: Many students have a lot of difficulty transitioning into the structured school week or day. Many also have trouble managing emotions. The mindfulness area that will consist of rugs, various seating, blankets, and a diffuser will give students a specific area where they can pause, hit reset, and take some time just for themselves and their mental health. Disco Lights: I created MathBall as a fun way to review before tests. The disco lights will create another layer to this very themed review day to make math more fun.
