My Project Earth Science could be some one's favorite class and who knows how many future geologists we have in our classroom. My students are English-language-learner students, honors students, and special education students, taking physical science in middle school. For most of my students, this is the first time seeing these topics. Book learning and powerpoints with pictures are still abstract for many. Being able to have actual specimens of the minerals we learn about in class is concrete learning and would make it real for them. The more concrete the learning through realia, visuals and other aides, the better. Here is where they need extra support. And if special things are provided like colorful visuals or mineral kits, it would make learning easier for the whole class, not just my ELL and special education students. Students have to be able to identify certain physical properties. With actual mineral kits, they can discover for themselves the uniqueness of each one. Pyrite isn't just another word to be memorized but will be the name of an actual piece of rock they can see for themselves. Please help me give my students the hands-on support they need to understand the content and see for themselves that Physical Science rocks!
