Being able to provide a classroom library furnished with new and updated books and flexible seating is something my students and I talk about often. I often spend my weekends in bookstores adding to our collection, but I have a few students who have read just about every book in our library. Students really enjoy shopping in the library and are eager to be the first one to check out a book whenever I add a new selection to the shelf. My students take great pride in the books that we own in our classroom. They not only hold themselves accountable but remind each other how to properly care for books. Although our library is just a rug and a few bookshelves, students show such appreciation whenever they are chosen to sit in the library and read or work. Having flexible seating and adding to the cozy places where students can enjoy a new book will enhance their reading stamina. My students know that the best way to become a better reader is by reading. New books by authors they love, topics they like, and characters who look like them or may be going through similar challenges will allow them to take a break from reality and just be children. Independent reading is a joy in my classroom; the flexible seating and new books will make it the highlight of our day.
