Ms. Hunter's Readers' Cafe
Funded Oct 13, 2023"When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully everyone is blessed" - Maya Angelou
We were so grateful to receive the notification that our project was fully funded. At Ms. Hunter's Readers' Cafe students receive reading and writing homework help, strategies to improve their reading abilities and independent reading time with student choice books. Having these books to provide to the students is essential to keep their reading skills sharp. Having this designated bookshelf allows the students to browse books like they are in an actual library or bookstore. Having the remote allows them to present their work to their peers without having to touch the screen.
At Dunbar, most students are indeed significantly behind in reading levels, comprehension and comfort. Many students who enroll for kindergarten have no reading skills, have not been exposed to one-on-one reading, nor have had access to books at home. This project will address these barriers and boost literacy by 1) implementing creative family engagement strategies which strengthen family units and their connection to school and 2) supporting teachers to ensure they have the tools they need to do their job to the best of their abilities. Both approaches are indirectly aimed at impacting students' and families' interest in and ability to read.
The anticipated outcome of this project would ultimately increase the number of students reading on grade level. The students choose the books THEY want to read and not books someone else has chosen for them. Through choosing books of their interests they will be exposed to more vocabulary, they will read the book over and over which will improve their fluency and they will be curious and ask questions which will extend their comprehension. Once they have finished the book, their accomplishments will spark joy and hopefully ignite a love for reading.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Hunter

Our partnership has made a tremendous impact on the lives of our Dunbar Family. We, and those we serve, deeply appreciate your generosity. Again, thank you for all you do for our students!”
