My students, who have speech, voice, and language disorders, require additional means of reaching the curriculum through the Makey Makey. This wonderful device helps therapists and teachers reinvent communication devices, switches, musical instruments, etc... so that the curriculum is obtainable, fun, and inspiring. I have used this device to bring music to students who otherwise could not participate in music classes, to help nonverbal students finally show that they can read, to bridge the gap between communication for non-verbal students. Believe me, if you see a student with severe intellectual disability suddenly show that they understand cause and effect for the first time in their life (in middle school) because of this tiny device, tears will flow! I only have one device at my school, but I now have multiple students who would benefit from individualized devices to help them access the curriculum.
The Makey Makey is a switch that overrides the keyboard of the computer so that we can invent individual means of accessing communication. With these devices, I can individualize sensory, curriculum, and communication needs. This stem pack would even help some of my students with mild-moderate language disorders thrive in their electricity unit because they can demonstrate their knowledge in addition to expanding their expression.
While most of the use would go to students with speech and language services, the devices that I would not use will be shared with our 8th-grade team to be used during the electricity unit. This would provide all students in 8th grade the opportunity to invent and inspire.
