Children are full of creativity and curiosity. They look at the world around them and see beauty and life, even when things are not ideal. Allowing and encouraging students to express their thoughts, views, and knowledge through art helps them to process and retain information. Teaching students about fossils is fun; watching them create their own models of fossils using clay, paint and brushes is much more effective. Talking about animal defense mechanisms triggers their imagination and desire to learn. Helping them draw, mold, or paint these animals gives them something they will always remember and an experience that will continue to grow with them. The addition of illustrations and art projects to any math, science or ELA unit helps students express what they have learned through outlets that often are not available. This also greatly increases the success of students who struggle with reading and writing, but excel in self expression through art and music. This is what I want my students to experience throughout the year. As a charter school there are some things that our school is not able to offer, an art program is currently among these things that are missing. However, art it is a very important part of expression and development in children. Having witnessed the impact that it can have on students, I incorporate it into my lessons and classroom. Art and music enrich and strengthen knowledge, deepen understanding, and soothe troubled hearts...all of which we want and need to do within the walls of our classrooms.
