  • Book Subscription Bags!

    Funded May 9, 2023

Thank you so much for your support of my Book Subscription Bag project. I began the program during the last month of school last year, but have continued it this year with your help. The response has been huge!

I am limiting the amount of people who can sign up in each session to 30, simply because that is the number of "swag" I have to put in the bags each time. The first time the bags were offered this year, I had 30 students sign up within three hours of receiving the email. Five teachers also signed up, although I gave them more adult swag than the glow-in-the-dark slime the students received. :-)

The next round of book bags will be offered on October 16th, and I've already had students asking about that opportunity. I am delighted with the response! In the feedback form the students fill out, 71% of them report that they are excited about what might be in the bag. 56% of them say they are also excited about the books they have received. Getting more books into student hands is, of course, the top goal of this project.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ashby

  • The Bookmobile is Coming to You!

    Funded Dec 29, 2020

Thank you for your donation to my bookmobile project. This program was started by the middle school librarians in my county as a way to reach our students while our physical spaces have been closed due to COVID. The bookmobile at my school has been a huge success with lots of happy students and that's thanks to your help!

You can see from the included photos that I have set up bookmobiles at several locations. All locations reached students from my school but also students from the elementary and high schools in our district. The most recent outreach was in conjunction with a food security truck in one of our poorest areas and it was there I had the highest circulation with families and children thrilled to have new books to read at home. The readers were so happy to get the books that I had a hard time keeping my composure and not crying as I checked out the books provided through Donor's Choose.

It is wonderful to have books available for all ages of students now so I can serve everyone who wants something. I'm also happy that most of the books provided through your donation are paperbacks and not so pricy that I have to be overly concerned about whether they are returned or not, unlike the books in my permanent collection. Several parents told me directly that they did not have transportation and would not be able to return the book their child wanted. Because the books are less dear, I was able to tell these parents that I just want them to have a book to read with their child and that I wasn't worried about getting the book returned if that wasn't possible.

This program has been a huge win for me, my library, and the students in my community. Thank you so much for helping to make it possible!”

    With gratitude,

  • Books for the Library

    Funded Dec 29, 2010

Thank you very much for your donations to my library! The books have arrived and I have processed them so they are already being circulated amongst my students.

Our county budget has been cut each of the last four years and unfortunately, this has impacted the library in terms of the number of books I can purchase. And I HATE to say no to a student when he or she requests something special! These books are all titles that have been specifically requested by my students so they are excited. But new books in the library always attract attention from everyone who visits, even if they are not specific requests.

Of course I appreciate your support of my program and what it has done for my students. But I can't thank you enough for your support of public schools in general!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ashby

My school is diverse in all sorts of ways including racially and economically. Many of my students don't have access to books they will enjoy in any other place other than my library. Since reading for pleasure tends to drop off at middle school, it is crucial to get these books into their hands.
