We've Got Spirit
Funded Sep 14, 2023Thank you so much for your generous contribution towards our school's leadership class. With this project funded, we were able to purchase some much needed paint, paper, and school spirit items to bring joy and excitement on our campus. The paper has been used to create vibrant posters that help up advertise upcoming events like dances, spirit days, and pep rallies. Additionally, the large butcher paper and paints have been heavily used by our students to create "door decor" projects. For this project, our leadership students are assigned to a teacher to decorate their classroom door for the holidays. Some designs include dancing penguins, polar bears, hot cocoa, and a cozy fireplace. Our teachers look forward to their door being decorated every year and with the help of this project we were able to bring some holiday joy to our staff.
In addition to the art materials we received, we also got new pom poms, necklaces, body paint, and sunglasses in our school colors. The leadership class has been begging to try Pep Rallies and with this donation, leaders now have spirit to wear and give to others to instill a sense of school pride. When I told then our project was funded, the students were bursting with excitement. Unfortunately we have not generated the same income as previous years, and although we host fundraisers for the class, we still break even on many of the events we put on. This project has lifted a major financial burden off the student shoulders and they are rest assured they have adequate materials for the class.”

Teach Equity- Classroom Library Rooted in Social Justice!
Funded Mar 16, 2021With your generous donation of high interest social justice books for middle school, my students have been able to get back into the groove of reading. Online learning was challenging in many different ways, but one of the most common complaints was that students were spending too much time in front of a screen and not enough time working on core skills of reading and writing. Now that we are back in person, my students have been reading at a more steady pace thanks to the excellent selection of novels and stories I now have in my library. With a variety of books from graphic novels to traditional literature each of the new books in my library have stories that are rooted
in social issues. Middle school is a precious age where students are beginning to think for themselves, and now my class can find a book that is just right for them. Thank you so much for giving me this gift of providing stimulating and thought provoking texts for my middle schoolers!”

Funded May 17, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donation of supplies and resources to my leadership class. This year, I am lucky to have two periods of leadership. But with this, comes double the amount of students and double the amount of projects, so we have been going through art materials and class supplies at a rapid pace. The students have been eager to bring the school spirit back after nearly two years out of the classroom. With your donation, my leadership students have been able to run fun LTA's (lunch time activities), conduct spirit competitions, and hosts fundraisers for the school and outside community. They are so appreciative of your support!”

A Long Walk to Water: Culturally Responsive Texts
Funded Nov 23, 2020Thanks to your generous donations, every seventh grade student was able to take home a copy of A Long Walk To Water. While we are still enduring remote learning, keeping students engaged with reading has been particularly difficult. One unique positive note from this experience is that it has been much easier for students to keep track of their materials, and especially because they have a personal copy of the text at home, we were able to have some stellar class discussions and create some unique projects inspired by Salva and Nya from the book. Some of the reading skills that were emphasized with this book were finding a central theme and tracking the multiple layers of identity that characters carry. Students with a passion for social justice and making a difference for their community connected with the unique set of challenges that the main characters faced in the story. Each Core class left inspired and had a deep appreciation for the privileges they have.”

Funded Nov 23, 2019Thank you so much for taking interest in our class project. The look of excitement on my students' faces were indescribable when I opened the box of new books. The War That Saved My Life is a novel we introduced to our classes last year as way for students to become familiarized with historical fiction texts and symbolism. While it was difficult to haul books over between classes, it was a sacrifice worth making because it meant that all of 7th grade was able to read the same Core Novel at the same time. The students enjoyed talking about the text and comparing their experiences with the main character.
Specifically, one lesson that we worked on as a class focused on the symbolism in the novel. Throughout reading, we would stop and jot down important objects to the main character, Ada, and kept track of their change from start to finish. By the time we completed the novel, the class chose 3-4 of those objects and created their own, unique symbolism project (pictures attached, one for each character). Additionally, students wrote about the significant meaning behind the object and what they might symbolize during the novel.
Reading in my classroom looks different from class to class, however, one thing that unites them together is their love for reading with a partner or having the choice for flexible seating. A few days a week, students are granted a period to read and journal their reading in their writers notebook. Many of them enjoy reading around a cozy spot in the room, or use a blanket from my class library. I find that allowing the class a chance to read somewhere else, puts the joy back in reading.
While this novel appeals to both boys and girls, the pictures attached are a few of my students who really enjoyed this book and the strong, relatable, character traits from Ada. Additionally, this purchase included the sequel to the novel, The War I Finally Won. As soon as we finished the first text, the class was chomping at the bit to read the next book. The 10 books flew off the shelves immediately!
Thank you so much for investing in this class and bringing the love of reading to middle school!”
