Having the opportunity to attend a high quality early education program enables these children to explore new ideas and develop life-long habits for learning. Every day, children expand their minds by engaging in the art, writing, math, dramatic play, and puzzle centers. Their creative exploration of the materials and the beautiful projects they create reveal much about the understandings and learning of each child. As educators, we need a way to capture all these children do and preserve it for interpretation and portfolios. The use of a high quality printer to instantly print photos taken in class will go a long way in making this vision a reality. Additionally, the photos printed in class will become an integral part of the classroom with displays documenting the children's learning. Children use these displays to refer to past experiences and think about new ways to create. Also, I have requested a color printer and toner to print our newsletter to keep the parents informed and inspire our students. It is important to document a project that a child or group of children are working on through color photos, typed children's dialogue, and a written reflection. This documentation is meant to inform others and gain support, feedback, and ideas from others. In an early childhood setting, this type of communication allows everyone access, including those who may not read yet or may not read English. Parents would also be able to see what the children are learning, how deep their thinking can be, and what their interests are. In a community that is made up of a very high English language learning population, there is a big communication barrier between parents and teachers. Without the worry of constant ink replacement, we can better focus on providing what is best for each child's learning.
