Graphic novels are flying off the shelves of libraries all over! This is incredibly encouraging for educators, as they are as appealing to reluctant readers and English Language Learners as they are to advanced learners. Although, there may some naysayers who don't think graphic novels and/or manga "count as real reading," the research is steadily proving otherwise. In her article "The Research Behind Graphic Novels and Young Learners," Leslie Morrison explains "When students read visual narratives, the activity in the brain is similar to how readers comprehend text-based sentences. However, when students learn to read graphic novels with an analytical eye, depth and complexity are added to the reading process." The graphic novels are the beloved and circulated section of the L. Library; which can make it challenging to keep the shelves well stocked on a district budget of $2 a student. The nature of graphic novels makes them more costly (heavy paperweight, colorful graphics) adding another layer of complexity when it comes to increasing the collection. In order to continue to provide a large variety of graphic novel options for all our readers, this DonorsChoose request seeks to purchase high interest manga and graphic novel titles to add to the library shelves. Availability through the library catalog, means the books can be checked out by any and all students, and supports the district's desire to promote self-selected materials for independent reading time.
