I am looking to develop the Spanish language collection of books in the library. Our reading materials budget is not as strong as we would hope it could be, therefore we are turning to donors to help as we work to build the Spanish language collection and create a campus culture of reading for ALL of our students, not just the English speakers. Research shows that when a student is a strong and proficient reader in their native language then they are more likely to be successful in their second language. Data indicates a strong relationship between the second language learner’s native language reading score and the second language reading score. According to James Cummins’ developmental interdependence hypothesis, “if the learner starts out learning a second language after developing high competence in his/her first language, attaining a high level of competence in the second language will be much easier.” A learner is able to develop biliterate skills if he/she is competent in both languages. In order to become a balanced bilingual, a learner needs to work to achieve equal competence in both languages. The more people who are balanced bilinguals, the more benefits society will receive. At the moment we are lacking resources and funding. We are looking to purchase authentic books written by Hispanic authors where students can see themselves in the texts they read and read in their native language. When students are able to read books and see reflections of themselves this allows them to feel important, gain self-worth, and in turn improve their literacy. Please help us add books to the library shelves for our native Spanish speakers and help to create a library that is all-inclusive.
