6th grade students will travel to the Sandler Center to view a performance by the Virginia Rep of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Prior to the play, students will explore Harriet Tubman in language arts as part of a unit in which students read texts closely to extract "rules to live by" posited by real and fictional figures. After the play, students will use the play as text evidence to infer various rules Harriet Tubman lived by. They will incorporate these into their final expository writing about rules to live by. This field trip meets 5 essential needs for our students! First, the experience builds critical background knowledge. Many sixth grade students struggle with reading comprehension. Recent research shows that building background knowledge is essential to addressing this deficit. Attending a historical play expands students' knowledge base in multiple key areas. Secondly, the field trip supports our school-wide writing initiative by providing an unforgettable experience that will form the basis of our sixth graders' writing for the beginning of the second semester. Third, the field trip will bolster the sixth grade unit in which students derive life lessons from famous texts and historical figures. In the current unit, students do not study any female figures. By attending the play and incorporating it into our unit, students will access a more diverse and representative array of texts and historical figures. Fourth, the play will preview and provide anticipation for the upcoming unit of study on the same topic in sixth grade history, creating a strong interdisciplinary connection. Finally, the experience will provide students with the necessary knowledge base to successfully read and engage with a different play in an upcoming unit. Students struggle to meaningfully comprehend and analyze this play if they have never before seen a professional production.
