  • Graphic Novels for My Creative Writing Classroom

    Funded Mar 16, 2025

Thank you so much for funding the refresh of my graphic novel library. My students will appreciate the range of texts and authors they will now be able tk choose from. They will also have plenty of inspiration to draw and write their own comic books. I really appreciate your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. WIlliams

  • A Bitter Root for American Literature

    Funded Jan 26, 2021

Thank you for enabling my students to read a graphic novel that combines the historical themes and the literary themes they've been studying all year. They are excited to learn about the process of reading a comic book before we read "Bitter Root." This means my students will learn about the different ways readers infer the story in a comic book through a process called closure. Closure happens when readers read between the comic book panels and automatically make inferences about what the comics artist and writer have chosen to leave out of the story to help with the book's pacing. This is one of the ways that we will analyze "Bitter Root" in a literary sense.

After my students learn how to read a comic book, they will spend some time researching historical events that occurred around the time "Bitter Root" is set. This includes events from the Red Summer, in 1921, and the Great Migration. We have already studied this time period, so students will use their research to determine what coloring they would use to depict these events if they were to make a comic book about the 1920s.

Although we haven't started reading "Bitter Root" as a class, students are excited when they come up to the school to pick up their copy. They like the art work, and they are interested in reading a graphic novel about a family of monster hunters. A few of the students told me they've begun reading the book and have deemed it "decent," which is high praise from a Chicago teenager.

Thank you again for your generous gift. This graphic novel will help me and my students end this challenging year with a fun text.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. WIlliams

Students learn best when they can utilize multiple means to access to the world around them. One of the best methods for students to access literature is through reading graphic novels and comics. I would like to provide my American Literature students with a new way of looking at the literature of the Harlem Renaissance by having them read "Bitter Root," a comic book set in 1920s Harlem about an African-American family of monster hunters. Throughout this school year, my students have been exploring the idea of what it means to be American. Bitter Root's main theme is identifying and fighting racism and the monsters that racism can make Americans become. As we've seen through the pandemic, the summer of social justice protests, and through the election, racism is a quality that is embedded in American culture. It would be amazing to be able to read relevant and engaging literature with my students.
