Last year, I was permitted to turn the small overgrown patch of soil next to my classroom into a garden for my students to create and explore. My students loved planting seeds, pulling weeds, and watering the garden to ultimately see many vegetables and flowers grow. Not only was gardening new and exciting, but it helped our class become a community in which everyone cared for the garden together. A worm composter would help students in my class come together to improve our garden: sorting scraps from our meals into the composter, turning it, and using it to enrich our garden.
