A Vision for English Learners' Success
Funded Feb 23, 2021Thank you for your contribution to my project. Your unbelievable generosity has helped many English language learners excel academically despite the adversities presented by COVID-19. Many of the students this project served had a hard time navigating the technology required during virtual learning. Thanks to you, once we were back in the classroom, we were able to put the technology away and accelerate learning with paper and pen. Students thrived when they were able to see me working on the same handout they had in front of them. Students were elated in the successes they saw, which further motivated them to continue studying. Your contribution to this project immensely helped keep these special students in school and on track to graduation.”

The Distance Between Us and the Latino Student Experience
Funded Oct 8, 2019Thank you so much for your generous donations. With copies of this book, I was able to teach my students the author's structural choices such as pacing, the inclusion of two languages, and point of view. Students practiced writing analytical essays, where they traced the protagonist's evolution as she overcame obstacles.
Outside of the academic skills students worked on, I was gifted the opportunity to demonstrate how important it is to tell their own stories. Many of my students have stories and life experiences similar to the protagonist of this book. They are recent immigrants from Latin America who have had to learn English, acclimate to a new culture, make new friends, and work through the heartbreak of leaving others behind. The joy I saw in students' eyes as they read their stories in a published piece of work was inexplicable.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity. You have truly made a difference not only in my students' lives but in mine as well.”

Funded Mar 18, 2015This project was a phenomenal success in our classroom. My Latino-dominated classes were thrilled to have a novel written by an author with which they could identify. The integration of Spanish recipes and words helped students realize their culture is recognized in our curriculum. Students studied rebellion within the novel and were asked to write a 5 page paper discussing the cause and power of rebellion. These resources were especially wonderful given the easy connection to rebellions happening so close to Washington DC. It was a wonderful way to create a bridge between the classroom and the real world. Your generous gifts created a unit with high student engagement and intriguing conversations. It was certainly one that I am confident students will remember for years to come.”
