There are many students at our school who are in need of, or have, high tech communication systems but have no way to independently bring these devices with them to other classrooms or use them in different seated positions. This puts a burden on the student because they cannot access their voice and it puts an undue stress on teachers because they are creating additional materials to support those students when they could be supporting the student’s voice. This project will allow us to purchase the necessary equipment to give them the access they need. It affects all areas of the curriculum as it will support the student’s voice and their ability to answer questions and participate across subject areas regardless of environment or positioning. For instance, when students go to PE, they will be able to bring their communication device and play "stop" and "go" using their own voice. When students go to the music room, they can request whatever instrument they want instead of being limited to what the teacher can offer. All too often our students with disabilities are limited based on caregiver assumptions and best attempts at offering choices. This project gives kids a voice they can take anywhere, from any room in the school to beyond graduation.
