I am nearing the end of my master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration on Trauma and Resilience in Educational Settings. I have a new appreciation, now more than ever, for looking at education through a "trauma lens." Our school went into spring break and didn't know that would be the last time we saw the 2019-2020 6th-grade students. Many of our students come from vulnerable backgrounds and have faced indescribable adversity at young ages. For a lot of our students, the school was their safe space, a place where they didn't have access to for the last six months. As we enter into the next school year with plans of being face-to-face, I want to make sure that my classroom is a safe space where students find solace, inspiration, and can express themselves creatively. Only being a third-year teacher, I haven't been able to completely provide that to my students on my own. Your thoughtful and considerate donations would help me to make that safe space a reality. The globe lights will be used to illuminate the classroom, without having to use harsh florescent lights. Art materials will provide students a creative outlet as we process and practice social-emotional skills, and be used to display their work throughout the classroom, much as one would at home. Posters will be used to inspire students to see beyond their current circumstances. Lastly, practical materials, like the easel, stools, and disinfectant will provide me with the opportunity to be creative with instruction, enable flexible seating options, and take the necessary precautions to ensure effective learning while maintaining safety. I know your donations will help me create a comforting and safe environment while being able to meet the developmental needs of all of my students!
