My goal with this nonfiction reading selection is to allow the students to read material that is realistic for them. Something at their grade level, as well as entertaining. I have had great results in the past using Scholastic News with other grades. I am hoping to do the same this year! I am unhappy with the given materials, so I thought by supplementing another form of reading would be a hit. Realistic reading material has a greater impact on readers at such an influential age. I simply cannot just throw any reading material at my students and expect them to connect and understand the material. I have to carefully choose realistic topics, as well as engaging and meaningful topics.
