Studies show that learning through play is the best way to teach pre-k students. The benefits that structured play has on a young child's social skills and oral language skills are endless. Due to the fact that our school is located in a poverty-stricken area, my students are not exposed to many learning experiences outside of our immediate community. My goal in the classroom is to provide themed dramatic play centers to teach the children about and expose them to experiences such as camping, farming, experimenting, cooking, and running businesses. They would also have the opportunity to use the costumes to experience different jobs such as a scientist, firefighter, doctor, veterinarian, chef, farmer, salesman, and many more. They will be able to completely immerse themselves in the center with their peers by (for example) becoming a grocery store clerk with the cash register or going fishing at their campsite with magnetic fish. The centers would change monthly giving the students a chance to explore each different experience for an extended amount of time. We would build on the center each week to expand their learning by giving them a specific role in the center. The ability to freely play in a structured play environment would allow them to focus on sharing, problem solving, building their oral language, and having fun.
