Do you remember the first time you were asked to read a play? For most people, hearing a teacher announce that the class was going to start reading Shakespeare was cause for moans and trepidation. This is the reaction I get every year when we reach our Shakespeare unit. Reading the No Fear Shakespeare version of Romeo and Juliet will allow the students greater access and independence when reading the play. If the students are able to read and understand a text that they were originally apprehensive of, their confidence will be boosted and they will be more likely to try to read new things in the future. By donating to our project, you will increase my students understanding of Romeo and Juliet and help open their minds to the world of Shakespeare. Being able to watch a film version of the play in conjunction with our reading of the text really helps the students to visualize what is happening in each scene. Additionally, I have found that the students are often more engaged in the reading if they are able to picture the characters and setting of the play. Please help me provide my student's with a deeper and more lasting impression of Romeo and Juliet.
