I know you’ll be shocked, but kids don’t always like all the “three Rs school stuff.” (Did a teacher really say that?) When we can roll the school stuff into a big Chromebook burrito, kids eat it up and ask for more! Kids beg to use learning websites like FunBrain. They bargain, “If we do all the notes, will you test us on Quizlet or Kahoot?” They actually request to type and submit their work on Google Drive. Nothing motivates like technology. Chromebooks positively reinforce technology skills, because they’re easy to use. While there are ample opportunities to use advanced apps, there are plenty of simpler apps that provide a great starting point. Many students don’t have reliable computer technology at home, so they flounder at first. Yes, they can use a cell phone, but they don’t know how to copy and paste. They can SnapChat anything and Tweet like mad, but they don’t know how to set margins, check their own school email (“We have school email?”), find reliable online sources, or monitor their own grades at Progressbook. Chromebooks change all that because they're kid-friendly, lightweight, durable, fast, and easy to understand. Since everything is web-based, kids can access their new tools from anywhere in the world, including their phones. As kids master technology, they acquire marketable career skills. They learn how to make their own web pages, surveys, spreadsheets, and data analysis tools. Students naturally develop STEM skills when they get Chromebooks in their hands. And those hands will be Chromanding the future before we know it.
