The temperature is soaring with the stress of standardized testing, social pressures, family issues, and world concerns. How are children coping with so many sources of worry? With mindfulness, self-regulation, and rhythm! Every guidance lesson at our school begins with a moment of silent reflection, some guided deep breathing exercises, and a mindful moment. We practice the techniques that students use to help them cope with the challenges they face throughout their day. Structured rhythmic activities, using drums or bongos, unify the class to share a pulse, like a living heartbeat, that connects the students to a shared energy level. We use that pulse to work off high energy levels and bring the class into a common sense of well-being. This non-verbal communication is unifying and calming. The sensory materials are made available throughout the day for short, intensive opportunities to get strong feelings under control and be ready for learning.
