Students who have disabilities are limited on what they are able to do. Sometimes using larger or smaller objects help our students to be equally as successful in completing a task as their able-bodied cohorts. Unfortunately the equipment they need to be successful is expensive and like all other departments, budgets are limited. Our students have an immense amount enthusiasm during Physical Education because it is a place where they can truly let go and be themselves. The equipment they receive will help them to become physically active. Equipment used by these students will not only help them physically, but it will give them a sense of purpose. They work with a group of students in a PE Leadership Training class and through hands on working experience and social immersion, my students become more aware of themselves and their surroundings. This equipment can make the difference in being able to learn to throw a ball. Typical equipment an able body student uses gives them the opportunity to be successful, but this equipment doesn’t translate to those individuals who are unable to grip the ball. This equipment allows for them to be successful in completing simple tasks such as kicking a soccer ball or catching a basketball to shoot into the hoop.
