I chose two sets of award winning biographies. Each one tells the true story of a child growing up facing extreme diversity in a different culture and finding innovative solutions. I also chose two sets of fictional stories, one featuring a male and the other featuring a female lead character. I want to use them to teach students to stand up for what is right and how empathy and caring for others can have positive impacts. I want to use these stories to inspire my students to make the best choices for their own lives. While learning and discussing the causes and effects of events in the books, I will also include curricular lessons in comprehension, using context clues for vocabulary, and offer themed writing assessments. These high-quality books offer many core literacy and language learning opportunities.
