The materials requested will be used to help give our students a voice, express their wants and needs, and access their environment. Without these materials, many of our students are unable to express themselves throughout their day or participate in functional activities. What appears as simple as a button, the a switch can open up worlds of function and communication to our students. It cannot only teach a student the powers of communication, but also allow them to participate in activities such as cooking. Without accessible materials such as switches, many of our students are not able to access and interact with the world around them. We begin to teach them to tell the world what they need and develop communication skills by using switches to relay their message. Communication is everything to a child with complex needs. Being able to tell others what we want or need and engage with other people and the world around us is what it means to be a participating member of a community. It also provides these children with the maximum ability to be independent, something we all value and need in life.
