Because of the diversity in my classroom, it is not only necessary, BUT essential that my students are taught in small groups after whole-class instruction has happened. Not only does this help me to effectively gauge their needs, but it also allows the students to feel more confident in their ability to achieve success. During this time, groups will meet with me multiple times a week to accomplish various learning goals(reading, writing, discussing text, practicing skills, and/or conferencing with me about their work) Since this time is vital to the success of all learners because it allows their diverse needs to be met, I feel the area should be comfortable and filled with supplies that are engaging, plus allow them to be creative. Hence, the literacy learning table was born.
The Literacy Learning table will be a coveted area of the classroom, instead of the "Oh NO, Not the teacher table." The table itself will have a dry-erase tabletop. The Literacy table will be fully stocked with a cart full of high-interest books. Another cart will house all of the fun writing instruments, colored-paper, post-its and highlighters for annotating, and markers for creating anchor charts and interactive notebooks. The area will be neat, organized, and comfortable. Not only will the literacy learning table create an area conducive for learning, but it will also connect learning with fun. By creating this area, it is my hope to engage students in the learning process in a way that motivates them to learn not just for today, but every day for the rest of their lives. "The Literacy Learning Table, Every Student, Every Day!"
