The fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and math are in high demand and short supply in our society. We know it is within these areas that many adults will find some of the most successful and rewarding careers available. The building blocks to those careers begin with students learning to navigate the basic skills of collaborating, communicating, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The various classroom supplies being requested will create a platform of learning through play, guided by students' natural curiosity and interest in creating and experimentation. I have chosen a variety of activities with the goal of reaching every child and every learning style, many of them being open-ended to encourage creativity. The 1 inch cubes, for example, can be used with small cups and craft sticks to build endless structures of varying dimensions and strengths. The various smaller activities will be done in centers so that every child will be able to experience a hands-on approach. The lesson plans will help guide me in whole group discussions that will be engaging for all students. I have a diverse group of readers, where some struggle to find real motivation for reading, and others can't ever seem to put a book down. I am requesting several collections of books at a variety of reading levels, related to the STEAM fields, that will spark interest in every young mind in my class and encourage every child to read to learn something new. Art plays an important role in STEAM, so that is included as well. The small variety of office supplies, such as dry erase markers, will be useful in practicing our skills, explaining our approaches, and documenting our learning. My vision is for all of my students to recognize themselves as creators, thinkers, and artists. Thank you.
