I want to make sure that everyone is in a book that they understand, and for some of my students that means reading an easier book. But it's hard to be a 12 year old kid and reading books for a 3rd grader, just because there are no exciting easier books to read. They want to belong to the reading culture just as much as everyone else, but they don't want to be embarrassed by their book choices. Often, they read books that are too hard for them just to try to fit in. The problem is that they're not understanding what they're reading and so they're not working on becoming stronger readers.
