Fred Roger's said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” At our school we refer to the children's self-chosen play activities as "work" because it emphasizes the importance of the important work they are doing to learn and grow. Active play materials are an essential part of this important work. Preschool students are active learners by nature and they need opportunities for gross motor activities throughout their day.
These materials will help me to incorporate gross motor activities across the curriculum, including the areas of literacy, social studies, STEM, and music. Student's will be able to practice their engineering skills while cooperating with peers to create structures with Ramps and Balls Exploration Set, the Ultimate Fort Builder, and the Super-Fun Marble Run. They will practice story-telling and letter and sound identification when using the Letters Beanbag Set, Tell-a-Story Dress-up Trunk, and the Alphabet train floor puzzle. At large group time student's will use the Rhythm Sticks, Multicultural Music Fun CD, and Silk Dance Scarves to explore other cultures, music, and movement.
Students will work together in both large groups and small groups when using these materials. Small group activities will help my students to develop social skills by allowing them to practice cooperation, problem solving, and communication with peers. Large group activities allow students to develop their ability to follow directions and to build unity with their classmates. These materials will provide countless opportunities for my students to learn and grow.
