Our new Superintendent has challenged teachers to create a “book-rich” environment in every classroom. Book access is a significant factor in literacy development. Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to be “choosy” about the books in a classroom library and to avoid purchasing every outdated and dog-eared book from yard sales. Students need to get excited about the books in the classroom library. Having a high-quality classroom library would allow me to present and display books in enticing ways that encourage and prompt interest, dialogue, and thinking. With a growing classroom library, the buzz about books in our classroom will bloom!
