Our students are hoping to begin working soon. They are excited about leaving the traditional academic classroom and moving into hands-on tasks where they can make their own money and decisions for their future. The classrooms that our students come to each day look much different than a traditional classroom, here at my school we try to provide our students with the real-life skills and tools that they would need to be familiar with in the employment arena that interests them. This year we have students who wish to train for jobs in 3 career clusters. We provide all the students with opportunities to job shadow, participate in work based learn experiences, interview preparation, and provide support to the employer's that hire to assist with training needs. We have a group of students that would like to become Custodians, Retail, and/or work in a commercial kitchen. The OSHA safety training materials are usually explained quickly during employee orientation which make it difficult for our students to understand. We would like to incorporate the safety training and visual symbols into the pre-employment activities to help students understand the dangers and the procedures that are in place to protect them as well as the other employees. We have a Boutique, which is a retail type setting with gently used interview appropriate clothing that is open to any student. Our ESE students run the boutique by managing and organizing it. They would like to be able to practice their skills by displaying attractive work ready outfits in it We have discovered that our students are enthusiastic, responsible, and once travel trained to an employment site- dependable.
