As the speech therapist in a brand new school, I am looking to gain new materials for the students that I serve. Nearly all of my students have developmental disabilities that impact their functional communication skills. Together, we work toward enhancing their communication in order for them to be understood by others, have their basic needs met, decrease the occurrence of emotional breakdowns, and appropriately interact with their peers in all social situations. Play therapy is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy that builds on the normal communicative and learning processes of all children. By adding new and exciting toys to our therapy room, my students will continue to enhance their communication through structured play. Additionally, I am looking to gain items in my classroom that will allow me to create a welcoming therapy environment and individualized visual aids that reinforce their communication skills. A colored printer, Cricut, and laminator would allow me to create exciting, adaptive materials that are student-specific and can be implemented during our therapy sessions as well as in their classrooms.
