Drones offer a unique opportunity to engage gifted learners in STEM activities. I have been teaching gifted students for the past 5 years and I am always looking for new ways to engage them. A drone would give my students access to experiences with engineering and physical science. My students are very familiar with NASA and Space X. However, they lack the hands-on experience of the engineering that goes on at these facilities. A drone would allow students to build on those engineering abilities. Examining the design of the drone, examining the design of the wings. Determining why the manufacturers make the propellers a certain way. Measuring the mass of the drone and determining the force needed to get the drone off the ground. As well as determining the force needed to keep it in the air! My ultimate goal would be to have students use the drone in a mock Mars scenario. Seeing if they can imagine, design, and build tools that could attach to the drone. These tools would be set to accomplish a specific task (gathering water, gathering rock/soil sample, taking photographs of a certain area, returning to its landing in x amount of time). This is something that we can use all year long and something that offers endless possibilities when it comes to STEM related activities!
