When I read books with my students, we focus on pulling out important details to comprehend and clearly retell stories. I try to choose short stories and books that my students will relate to, in order to increase motivation and buy-in. When students play games during our time together, they often don't realize that they are practicing their speech and language skills. Games like Taboo and Story Cubes encourage students to use language in a fun, functional way. By choosing motivating games that also target goals, I am able to draw my students in and make them excited to work with me.
