Hands on learning materials help students master basic math and reading skills, while developing students' fine motor skills. Young students need to be able to touch and manipulate things to make sense of the world around them. These manipulatives allow them to do that. Materials like these are especially beneficial to my students with special needs. Many students with special needs struggle with fine motor skills and sensory processing disorders. Manipulatives give opportunities to my students to exercise their finger muscles and develop their pincer grasp. Manipulatives also promote critical and creative thinking. Manipulatives are important tools in helping students to think and reason in more meaningful ways. They use a variety of objects to help them solve problems. My students love to use puzzles, stamps, letter tiles, and counters to practice their math and reading skills. They are more engaged in their learning. When my students are more engaged in their learning, they are more excited to practice new skills and learn new concepts. Hands on materials help foster a love for learning in young children. When students use manipulatives, they can experience how much fun learning can really be.
