Legos Build Language Skills!
Funded Dec 4, 2019Thank you so much for these Legos! In Kindergarten we teach Community helpers and places in our community. We have been learning what each community helper does and what type of place they work at. The lesson that I did with my students was to create groups of 6 and each group voted on what community building they wanted to make. I then had the remaining students pair up and build the community helpers that match the community building. In groups, they collaborated, shared, and worked together to make their community building. One group decided to make a police station, another group made a hospital, and the other group made a firehouse.
I noticed that each group was extremely engaged in the building process with much collaboration and communication. The students were able to problem solve and work together in order to make their building look like the community place and for the building to stand on its own. The buildings had specific characteristics that resembles that community place. The students were smiling, having fun, and were able to use their oral speaking and listening skills to share and contribute their ideas. I was overhearing specific vocabulary that related to the topic. The students were also using appropriate socialization skills because I overheard students say "thank you", "that is a good idea", and "let's try this".
After the students made their buildings, the next day we used technology to talk about their community place. The students had to use the app Chatterpix Kids to upload their final product and talk about. The students took turns talking into the app and described what they did to make their building, who works in that community place, and why that community building is important. The students were able to recall the Lego activity, reflect on their group project and talked about it. The students were able to look at their creation in order to provide them visual assistance while they spoke into the app. Each group member used key vocabulary that related to the subject matter. These Legos are very entertaining manipulatives that serves as a creative tool and outlet for students to work together, communicate and problem solve for many projects to come.”
