  • Library Maker Spaces

    Funded Mar 2, 2022

I just want to thank everyone for donating to our school. Being able to have items that you dream of using with your students helps us show students new things. I have worked in my school for 8 years now and makers spaces wasn't as popular during that time. I would find ways to create maker spaces in my library with items from the dollar store or whatever I could find to make my library a little more fun and exciting to visit. I work with so many different groups of students. Pre-K -5th, I'm the cheerleading coach and I have book clubs and mentor groups. Having these items for the maker space really keeps them excited about the library and learning. Thank you”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jarrett

  • The Gift of Knowledge

    Funded Jan 7, 2022

Thank you for always being there for the educators that want to go above and beyond for their students. I have been able to work with my students, parents, and staff to develop the culture of Reading within our school. Now what I have have learned from working with my students is that they love to read as well as explore new reading materials.

Reading allows my students to think beyond what they normally read, but to explore that reading can be fun.

My students also love that I am able to offer them free books to build their own library at home. This has really help my students especially during this pandemic. Thank you again for the support.”

  • The Gift of Knowledge

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

First I would like to say Thank you for being a reliable resource to educators. I have met so many teachers that have always spoke very highly about the organization. I have been teaching since 2001 and became a school librarian in 2007. This was my first time using Donors Choose and I was very pleased at the outcome. I have always worked in schools in the inner city. It has always been a challenge to get my students to read, however I would find ways to encourage students to read. Teaching my students that reading is a gift that can be shared with others is one way to help build literacy within a household and community.

While working as a part time librarian in two different schools. I decided to create

events to help students and parents with reading. I created a family literacy night. this event is held two times a year. One before the Christmas holiday and one in June before the summer vacation. During the family literacy night in December each student would receive a gift bag with two books, literacy activities to do at home during the vacation, and parent information to help their child increase their reading skills or develop a love of reading. I called this "The Gift of Knowledge". This have been our 6th year and the parents, students, and staff look forward to new books every year.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jarrett

My students read on a daily basis in the library or in class, however students that come from low-income families have a harder time purchasing new books or books to build their own libraries at home. Now that my school has over 500 students, it has been harder to receive free books for my students. Every year before the winter break my goal is to make sure every student in my school receives a holiday gift bag with 1-2 books in each bag. This is done during our annual “Family Literacy Night.” During the literacy night, parents will have the opportunity to learn reading strategies and activities that are fun and interactive for their children. Family Literacy Night is a great way for parents to help their children with improving their reading skills. Students can also receive free books to build their own at home library that would increase their reading ability and vocabulary skills. The mission is to educate the students on becoming lifelong learners for the 21st century.
