At our school we have lots of children that are struggling to read. We believe that the older children are struggling because of delays in oral language and phonemic awareness. We are trying to prevent struggles by providing instruction to develop phonemic awareness and oral language as early as 3 and 4 years of age. We think that it is important for parents to be a part of the effort. We know that children who are read to learn more words than children who are not read to. We want parents to read stories that children will enjoy and will also specifically target oral language and phonemic awareness skills like rhyming. We want to provide the materials because we know that parents have limited financial means. These pouches will allow for us to organize reading materials, protect the texts as we rotate the books and use them from year to year.
