Second grade curriculum has a huge grammar piece. We teach parts of speech, word parts, comma usage, quotation usage, and more! Reading to my students about these different things gives them more of a connection to what they're learning. We have something we can refer back to and they can remember what was discussed in the book rather than what was on a worksheet we did two weeks ago. Grammar has a big emphasis in second grade, but so does math. Second graders are solving complex word problems, identifying numbers up to 1000, and adding and subtracting with regrouping. It's the dreaded "carrying" and "borrowing" math skills. They need a strong understanding of place value--how much each number is actually worth--in order to understand fully the standard algorithm to regrouping.
