These books will give my students perspectives that they may not have been exposed to in regards to people of different Latino and Native communities in the United States. It is important for students to see the struggles that people of these communities encounter and make connections to their experiences as middle schoolers. The COVID pandemic has alienated most of my students. Many were not able to visit public libraries and much less be exposed to books with characters that resemble themselves. My students will gain awareness of the thread that makes us all human. Knowledge is power! I want my students to be aware of what it means to be human and how connected we truly are! The book library that I am requesting will allow my students to read about Latino and Native experiences of some who have contributed positively to society and give hope to those in dispare. The white boards will be used as an alternative modality for sharing information in class with a partner or their table groups. While I incorporate a blended classroom, differentiated methods of responding are important for my students. The following are content standards that students will strengthen by reading the books in my library. L.6.4a Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word's position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. SS.6-8.WGGS.22-Discuss the contributions of racially and ethnically diverse leaders to the advancement of communities and nations around the world.
