Many black and brown students struggle with math identity and seeing themselves as people who do math. In my class, we will be looking at the ways in which we are already doing math in our day-to-day lives as well as the history of math in our own cultures. Weaving is mathematical and is an indigenous practice found almost in every culture. With these materials, students will gain a deeper understanding of themselves as mathematicians and develop an appreciation for math that has existed for over a thousand years. Help me to empower our youth not just to survive but to thrive as people who do math, build math, create math and live math.
