These STEM Bins provide students with an opportunity to be creative, critical thinkers as they explore engineering and architecture in a developmentally appropriate way. Students come into the makerspace to engage in and apply the design thinking process to solve problems. They approach tasks with a maker mindset and ask, "What can I create or make to solve a problem and/or meet the needs of my customer?" The task cards and materials included in these STEM Bins provide open ended challenges that encourage students to think outside the box. Students are eager to be inventors and love to challenge themselves to develop creative solutions. We spend a lot of time talking about how engineers make mistakes and that instead of perceiving mistakes as failures, we can see them as opportunities to learn and improve. As students embrace this mentality, they become comfortable with the thought that their first design may not be their best, and that there is great power in redesigning.
