Using air-dry modeling clay as part of the art component of our collaborative cultural lesson will give students a chance to express themselves through a media that they might not yet have the opportunity to explore. We want our students to be inspired to become life-long learners. We believe that the disciplines that we teach are skills that students can keep pursuing and building upon for their whole life. We are co-teaching a lesson that involves over 250 Spanish II, Choir, and Visual Art students. The students that have not been able to have art on their schedules may not ever get a chance to use any type of clay or have had practice drawing or painting an idea. Our Students will be joined together through this journey of collaboration to discover the connections within the Arts and find how one discipline might influence another or enhance one another. Students will be given the opportunity to use their hands to create a 3D Sculpture. For most students, they will welcome a chance to use this talent and for others, they will get learn a new skill. The use of hands, fine motor skills, and attention to detail will help enhance literacy and language development. Modeling clay is more readily accessible than a firing clay and hopefully, this experience will inspire them to explore all the wonderful art that can be made with air-dry clay. Each medium holds its own wonder and creations, and this could be a springboard into exploring ceramic art, which is another discipline that has a wide range of beautiful applications. Not all students will have access to a kiln at school or at home, but they would be able to use air-dry clay and be motivated to explore other areas of Visual Arts.
