Unfortunately, we do not receive any funds to purchase materials nor do we have access to color printers to print needed materials for our therapy sessions; therefore, we need to use our own money to purchase materials and to print items in order to provide meaningful and effective therapy to our students. Our students require the use of visuals, stimulating activities, modified activities, and reinforcing activities in order to provide effective therapy. Given a motivating activity, a minimal and nonverbal child may use a picture of a desired toy to make a request - THIS IS COMMUNICATION! Without a motivating activity, we may not be able to elicit this basic communication skill from a child who has to the ability to do so. Children with communication disabilities often find it difficult to understand and follow spoken instructions. They may not be able to express well what they want or need. Visuals can help individuals communicate what they expect, decrease problem behaviors, and promote appropriate, positive ways to communicate. Visuals can help them understand what to expect and will happen next and reduce anxiety.
