Scholars from high-poverty, like ours, are subjected to trauma on a daily basis. Many of them show behaviors that parallel PTSD. The traditional route of shame and suspend is ineffective, and leads to more time out of the classroom. We have also learned that school suspensions contribute to the criminalization of youth and places them in what is known as the school to prison pipeline. We have developed a way to do things differently. Our Pride Room is an alternative to suspension that uses restorative practices in conjunction with social-emotional learning to help scholars work through their behaviors. The books selected will be resources used daily in the Pride Room to help scholars understand and overcome behaviors that hinder their education and social growth.
