These four novel sets will be the core of our literature studies this school year. Through these novels, the skills and concepts of character, vocabulary and plot development, author's purpose and theme will be taught. I will create units for these novels which will include the teaching of reading and writing standards based on the California State Standards. Novels provide a richer reading experience for English Language Learners than short fiction excerpts. They give students the opportunity to relate to a character, follow an interesting plot line and learn about the world around them. In essence, they help create lifelong readers which is the ultimate goal of any Language Arts classroom. In conclusion, these novel sets will create similar reading experiences to those in a general grade level Language Arts classroom.
